SAN FRANCISCO – Today, in response to the Supreme Court ending 50 years of constitutional protection for abortion, Aimee Allison, Founder of She the People, released the following statement:

We are outraged by today’s Supreme Court decision that takes away the freedom of millions of women - and women of color who will bear the brunt. Abortion is a central right to advance racial and gender justice. Despite decades of advancement, the Supreme Court has taken the nation back fifty years. We know the way to restore this right is to support Senators and state legislators that will codify abortion rights into law. She the People will use all available resources to elect leaders that will do that this year.

This November, there are women of color on the ballot - most critically Florida Senate candidate Val Demings and North Carolina Senate candidate Cheri Beasley – who have pledged to vote for the Women’s Health Protection Act to restore abortion rights. Women of color as the most powerful Democratic voting block have the power to elect champions that protect our most basic human right to choose what happens with our bodies. We intend to use that power. Our national network of volunteers will fight for these and other leaders, and activate and support women of color who are organizing our communities and voters.

This decision is a travesty, and She the People will focus our efforts on electing women of color who will restore our rights and protect our hard-won freedoms.”

She the People has organized tirelessly for this moment, beginning with the first ever women of color focused Presidential forum in the Spring of 2019, and continuing on with polls, surveys, and focus groups all showing that a woman of color VP would be essential to Democratic victory. She the People’s surveys of women of color in politics across the country showed exactly what was needed to be done to woo the women of color vote — including comprehensive investments in women of color in down-ballot races across the country, expanding the Supreme Court with all women of color, and reimagining the police. Since Nov. 8, 2019, She the People and women of color-led organizations have mobilized over one million women of color voters in seven crucial states, making it the first national women of color mobilization effort in American history.
