Kathryn’s enthusiasm is contagious when she talks about creating a culture where young people are excited to vote. The child of immigrants who came from the Philippines, she understands the reasons why people feel disempowered and become disengaged from the political process and she wants to change it.  By giving students the resources and education they need to become civically engaged, she says they will see themselves reflected in society and bring their families along as well. Outreach and engagement to Asian American and Pacific Islander communities specifically is close to her heart.

Kathryn works with the Students Learn Students Vote Coalition, which aims to increase nonpartisan student voting on college campuses around the country. Through partnerships and campus voter registration days, they have helped to steadily increase the amount of students that vote. Their goals next year include increasing student voting from 48% to 60% and to close the racial/ethnic voting gap between white students and students of color. They also hope to get students 21 and under to vote in greater numbers.

What is the song you will listen to on repeat in 2020?

“Quiet by MILCK.”

What are you reading right now?

I just finished reading the article White Supremacy Culture by Tema Okun and Kenneth Jones.”

Who is your plus one?

Daniela Mrabti is a really badass woman who is the communications and social media manager at the Alliance for Youth Organizing. She deserves more recognition for the work she does. No one ever talks about the people behind the Internet who are lifting up the work those on the ground.”
