SAN FRANCISCO – Today, in response to news that former-VP Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris have won the election, Aimee Allison, Founder of She the People, released the following statement:

“This is a watershed moment for our nation, and what women of color have been fighting for the last four years. Not only have we elected qualified leadership, we have the first-ever Black and Asian American vice president in our nation’s history.

“Women of color fought voter suppression and showed up at the polls — in person and through mail-in ballots — at an overwhelming rate. We called for Kamala Harris’ VP nomination, and had a pivotal role in Biden’s win. With this powerful ticket in the White House, our issues and voices will be heard and represented.

“While we celebrate this win, the work is far from over. This was always bigger than just one race. We’re thrilled to have Sen. Harris become Vice President Harris, but she is just the first in what we hope will be a long line and new standard of women of color representation in politics. We need Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and Asian American Pacific Islander women leading at every level of American politics — and we will keep fighting until our democracy reflects the diversity of our nation.”

She the People has organized tirelessly for this moment, beginning with the first ever women of color focused Presidential forum in the Spring of 2019, and continuing on with polls, surveys, and focus groups all showing that a woman of color VP would be essential to Democratic victory. She the People’s surveys of women of color in politics across the country showed exactly what was needed to be done to woo the women of color vote — including comprehensive investments in women of color in down-ballot races across the country, expanding the Supreme Court with all women of color, and reimagining the police. Since Nov. 8, 2019, She the People and women of color-led organizations have mobilized over one million women of color voters in seven crucial states, making it the first national women of color mobilization effort in American history.
